Problems with legacy Hindi fonts
Since the advent of personal computers, Hindi typesetting has been complicated by the lack of a commonly accepted standard for encoding digital Hindi text. A plethora of Roman fonts adapted for Devanagari has been in use which are not mutually compatible. This meant that applying different fonts to Hindi text was likely to produce garbage, and could make producing professional Hindi typesetting difficult, not to mention managing the project.
These days, Unicode is the modern standard for typing and storing Hindi text. It guarantees that the text will be interoperable and reusable, and makes possible high-quality Hindi typography in a way that adapted Roman fonts could not. It is what we use by default for our Hindi typesetting.
If you have some Hindi text that you would like us to typeset, and that was typed using a legacy Hindi font, we may be able to convert it to Unicode for you – please enquire.
Combined Hindi translation and typesetting
For complete peace of mind, some clients prefer WorldAccent to provide the Hindi translation. This integration allows us to deliver the maximum benefits of our efficient workflow and cutting edge technology, saving you time and money in the long run.
Two points of interest on written Hindi:
- Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, which was originally used to write Sanskrit.
- There is no concept of capital letters within the Devanagari writing system.
