Which Indian language?

India is home to many different languages. Hindi is the principle official language of the republic, with English being recognised as a secondary official language. However, there are several hundred languages – of which 29 are spoken by more than a million mother-tongue speakers (2001 Census). Amongst other factors, the appropriate language for a translation is determined by region and intended audience.

WorldAccent uses years of experience to guide you on this, and offers translation into all the major languages of India and neighbouring countries. Services include Bengali translation, Gujarati translation, Hindi translation, Malayalam translation, Marathi translation, Nepali translation, Punjabi translation, Sinhalese translation, Tamil translation and Urdu translation. Our in-house studio also offers a complete Indian language typesetting service.

Professional Indian translators

A successful translation will always pay attention to style, linguistic connotations and cultural appropriateness.

When translating from English to a language of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh, we only employ professional, mother-tongue translators, selected according to their language skills, educational background, subject knowledge and experience. They will be fully briefed on the context of the assignment, including your target audience and the role of the document within your communication strategy.

Our use of the latest software will ensure consistency within your current Indian translation project and also across any related projects. It can also help to reduce costs and turnaround times.

If you wish, you may review your Indian translations prior to final delivery.

Issues with Indic fonts

Translation into Indic languages has historically been complicated by the lack of universally accepted standards for storing Indic-language text. A multitude of Roman fonts adapted for Indic languages has been in use which are not mutually compatible, leading to an unsatisfactory and chaotic situation.

These days, we recommend sticking to Unicode as far as possible, as it guarantees that the Indic text will be transferable and reusable across any modern system or software. We will use it by default, so you will need to let us know if you need your Indian translation to be typed in a particular non-Unicode font (if you are unsure, we can advise).

If you have some existing Indic text that needs to be in a different font, we may be able to convert it for you to save re-typing– please enquire.
